Meeting New Mummy Sophie

This week on the blog I am sharing my lovely chat with Sophie I caught up with new mummy Sophie one week after the birth of baby Theo to ask her all about how life was with a newborn.

Sophie - Hi, I’m Sophie! I am a lifestyle &, now, family blogger. I have recently just gave birth to our little bundle of joy, Theo. He is my first baby so I’m currently learning the ins and outs of motherhood. I love baking, interior design & spending way too much time on Instagram!

Emma - As a new mummy what is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is due to have their little one soon?

S - Relax. Don’t panic about whether you’re going to be a good mum, because you are. I used to spend my pregnancy fretting about how to do things. I’d never changed a nappy before, never mind breast fed! But I did it, because I tried to remain calm. I’m not going to say that I stayed completely relaxed and didn’t panic, because I did.

But I wish I didn’t spend days and days worrying about what kind of mother I will be, as you have no idea until that moment comes. Your life will change, there is no doubt about that. Your priorities will flip.

The days that you spent on the sofa relaxing, being able to get up whenever you wanted, eat whenever you wanted, sleep whenever you wanted - they’ll change. You will have this little bundle of joy to take care of. But you will love it. And you will be a perfect mummy. So relax and enjoy your time that you have now. Don’t panic about motherhood as you’ll smash it!

E - What is your biggest mummy win to date?

S - I think there are a lot of mummy wins every single day. Even getting out of bed in the morning can be a mummy win! For me, the biggest mummy win to this day is being told that Theo stayed the same weight at our first midwife appointment. They normally expect babies to lose weight, as it’s normal, but knowing that he hadn’t lost anything made me incredibly proud; like I’m doing a good job.

E - What is one thing you have you done since Theo arrived for you?

S - Take a bath. I know it sounds like such a little thing but sometimes a nice bath or shower can feel so good. When you have a baby, your life definitely becomes...well...baby. Your life will be baby. So time for yourself doesn’t really happen. You sometimes forget to eat, let alone take time out for yourself. But when you have the time, taking a nice, relaxing bath can feel great.

Especially when you feel sore, it can help relieve those aches and pains. I do believe in taking time out for yourself and for your partner, it’s important for your mental health; even if it is something small.

E - What did you find most daunting about bringing Theo home from the hospital?

S - Knowing that we were responsible for this little guys life. We had no doctors and no midwifes at the other end of a buzzer. No breastfeeding help, no checks to see if he’s ok. Normality. Kind of. We had to take care of the little guy, making sure he was fed, changed and content. It was our job and no one else’s. But even though it was scary, it was something I was ready to do. You prepare for these moments whilst you’re pregnant, maybe not physically but definitely mentally. And you do a good job, even if you feel like you aren’t.

E - What is your must have hospital bag item?

S - Energy drinks! Throughout my labour, I only drank water as it was the only thing I felt like I could stomach. But afterwards, I was shattered, obviously! I had just gave birth after a long time of pushing, my body felt weak. It is very demanding on your body. All I wanted was Lucozade Sport.

But I only packed one bottle, so that disappeared in a minute. After you give birth, you will be tired. And I mean VERY tired. Even if you don’t feel it, your body will be weak. It deserves a fake, sugary energy buzz! Other than that, I’d say take it easy on the things you pack. I definitely over packed, even though I went in there thinking I had under packed. I hardly touched 60% of the stuff that I packed. So don’t fret; take things easy and pack the things you want to pack. Like cosy socks!

Thank you so much Sophie for sharing an insight into your life with a newborn! Theo is absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to see more photos of him as he grows!
