up too early. tired.
a little jealous he gets
to leave, I swim on—
alone. upstream. I
regurgitate swallowed sighs
between the hours of
eight and five thirty;
I fight torrents of toddler
tears, I wade through mess—
wipe dirt-smeared cheeks and
grubby fingers. I am an
attorney of sorts;
I adjudicate,
negotiate, I appease,
referee— solve cold
cases with warmth and
force myself to reckon with
“why”. why? I chose this
route. so I bury
my dreams in the soft skin of
your neck; you tilt your
head heavenward— eyes
curved like crescent moons, crinkled
with delight— and scream
as I tickle you.
