Why Learning Is Self Care - Rebecca Browne, Founder of Bambinos & Me
/Why Learning Is Self Care
I had a particularly stressful day of battling home schooling with both my 10 and 6 year old. That being a heavy task in its self whilst having one eye being on my work phone plus the subconscious stress of constantly trying to keep everyone quiet so my husband could work in the home office.
It hit me that I needed to do something that didn’t involve children.
I adore my girls and my business but I was eating and sleeping children.
I had already signed up to an online fitness class but I wanted an outlet where I could switch off and engage my brain in a different way.
I have always had an interest in the creative arts which I include throughout my Baby & Yoga Classes alongside an interest in therapeutic play. In which I have previously trained as a Hospital Play Specialist, therefore when I saw an Art Therapy course was available online, I jumped at the chance of exploring further.
I’m well aware that I won’t be qualified as an Art Therapist, which involves a lengthy and intense process of study however it was a great way of applying myself to something different and being able to further my knowledge into a new realm which could be used within my day to day work with children.
There are a range of online courses which offer you CPD credits and are of particularly low cost currently, meaning that learning is accessible to all.
Take some time to have a think; Is there something you have always wanted to learn ?
What are your interests ?
What would you like to develop further?
If you fancy learning something new or developing a skill, but you are not sure where to start, pop a few ideas into a journal and see what you come up with.
How can learning be a part of self care ?
Personally I find it relaxing and it makes me “switch off” from home life and work life.
I did question myself prior to undertaking the course and thought I was just adding to my “to do list” but as it’s available from my phone, I can dip in when I have 10 minutes here and there.
When you enjoy doing something, it isn’t a chore.
When we learn something new we boost our confidence as our knowledge is increased and we feel more empowered whether that is professionally or personally.
We boost our self esteem, whether that’s learning gardening skills or web design.
As we learn we are keeping our brains active which can reduce depression and anxiety and gives us coping mechanisms when dealing with new situations.
Learning keeps us young!
How amazing is that?
When we learn new things we grow new brain cells which stimulates neurone which can have a positive effect on preventing dementia.
When we talk about self care we often talk about eating nourishing food for our body, learning is nourishment for our brain.
One of the best things is that it can bring an enriched positivity and happiness to our lives and who doesn’t need more of that?
