Redefining self-care as a new mama - Laurie Lo, Blooming Mamahood
/Redefining self-care as a new mama
We already live in a very busy world and it is easy to start neglecting our own self all too often. We spend our whole lives barely meeting our own needs, so when we first become mothers, the task of filling our own cup becomes that much harder.
I believe it’s important to take the time define what self-care means to us, especially as new mamas. So what is self-care and why is it important? Self-care is a gift we give to ourselves by honouring our bodies and souls.
It’s about creating moments where you are dedicated to your own well-being. Self-care is more than a reward. It’s what you need to be the best version of yourself you can be, to replenish your energy.
As a mama, there is this implicit expectation that you have to be selfless and take care of everyone. We think we must put the beds of others ahead of our own, that it is somehow our duty as mothers. When we internalize this idea, we forget that everyone should include ourselves as well. We cannot be the best mom or best wife we can be, if we are depleted. In order to feel good enough to be there for others, we must tend to our own needs, fill our own cup! As the saying goes, “you cannot pour from an empty cup.” So ask yourself this, mama, “how can I better take care of myself?”
When we think self-care we often think of pampering ourselves. Taking a candlelit bubble bath, getting your nails done, wearing a face mask, etc. That’s not wrong, but self-care is much more than that. Self-care can be anything that helps you feel good and be happy. That includes the food you eat, the way you move your body, the activities that bring you joy as well as the people that make you happy.
Here is non-exhaustive list of what self-care is for me as a new mama:
Self care is drinking a warm cup of tea or coffee in the morning.
Self care is taking a long shower without having to rush out.
Self care is going to bed early.
Self care is taking time to connect with friends and family.
Self care is making sure your own health is in check.
Self care is eating at your favourite restaurant.
Self care is asking for help when you need it.
Self care is reading a book or scrolling through Instagram if that’s what helps you unwind.
Self care is doing a fun stress-free activity with your family.
Self care is going on a date with your partner.
Self care taking the time to do your hair or pick a nice outfit that makes you feel good for the day.
Self care is getting a massage or going for a yoga class because you work hard and deserve it.
Self care is taking time to pursue your passion project.
Self care is cuddling with the dog.
Self care is taking time to work on yourself.
Self care is taking a break when you need it.
Finally, self care is cutting yourself some slack and appreciating your own hard work.
What does self-care look like to you? You got this mama!
