Anthem of the Mothers (after Karan Chambers) - Emily Mew
/Anthem of the Mothers (after Karan Chambers)
Words: Emily Mew
They said we would change
the way flowers open,
soft petals unfurling, shifting
gently from bud to radiant bloom –
all the talk of blossoming
left little room
to speak of the
uprooting,
the replanting,
the sprouting alien shoots
and branches,
the cut and stitch grafting,
the upheaval,
the unravelling
but with our roots
buried deep
in motherhood’s soil
our voices rise to share
the truth if it all,
we sing songs of love
and songs of strength
songs of joy
and songs of pain,
songs of growing and breaking
and growing again,
they combine in the air
to form an anthem, declaring
we write our own stories
and define our own space –
we are a wild garden,
and all of life is welcome
in this place.
